Forward

Mike and Mykal are a father & son duo that started a production company about two years ago. They are working on the next phase of their production company and look forward to being involved in feature film making. They rolled out a podcast and newsletter to give their audience a means to hear where they are headed and what they are experiencing. The newsletter (The Sprinkler) is fun, informative and value add!  They remind their audience that they leave politics at the door. They want their energy to be positive and wellness based. Share gratitude and be cool to one another!

We hope you will join us monthly as we explore different ways to enrich our lives and have some fun exploring the human race.

We bring old school and contemporary ideas to the table.

Mykal & I operate with the credo; be cool to one another. We want to connect with people, and be present while we enjoy this journey.  We have embarked on something that is moving in a direction that affords us to display our creativity and love for film & music in our Psycho Studio’s Podcast on YouTube – now with video!

Come with us as we explore ways to live in the moment and appreciate all we have, rather than what we have not.

Welcome psychos one and all!

The Sprinkler

The newsletter continues to evolve. Our topics will be reviewed throughout the year and adjusted accordingly. We will continue to leave politics at the door. Look for our new image feature; Rock N Roll image of the Month in this chapter and subsequent ones!

Film – Music - Some Wellness – Commentary – Some Sports and Random Headlines

Let’s start with a film quote we love:

You learn a lot more from those bumps than from when things are going great.

Wes Craven

The Psycho Scale:

We use our Psycho Scale for film and TV series rating scores. Our Psycho Scale is 1-Psycho, with Psycho being the highest; 10. Mykal and I watch all scored films and TV series; drawing from decades of real viewing experience.

Film

February is the short month that many love and many hate. Valentine’s Day was rarely significant for me, and Mykal and I watched films as opposed to eating chocolates or sending flowers. We continue to marvel at the amazing film, Nosferatu! There is something so bittersweet about seeing a film that checks all the boxes and comes in at a nine or higher! WE love great films; it spoils us as we wade through the mediocre to terrible films. That is the brilliance of movies!

Mykal had an interesting suggestion for this month’s Sprinkler; name your top five favorite actors and bottom five least favorite actors. This sparked a great share, and expanded to favorite directors, least favorite directors. We will kick off this month with our top and bottom actors. These lists are not all inclusive, and five in each category were whittled down from extensive lists.

Top 5 Actors

Christian Bale

Willem Dafoe

Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Daniel Craig

Peter Cushing

Honorable mention-Margot Robbie

Blurbs Top 5

Christian Bale displays amazing range, disappears into each role. A true movie star.

Willem Dafoe captivates in every scene he is in. He has unique qualities for a contemporary actor. A true unicorn.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman was an incredible actor with unbelievable range. He stood out in every scene he was in. A true chameleon.

Daniel Craig he is the true James Bond. His other roles display depth and sincerity.  He captivates in all roles.

Peter Cushing was a classically trained actor and made Hammer Films what they became. He took the Universal Monsters into a new & brilliant universe.

Honorable mention-Margot Robbie has incredible range like Bale; every role she is in is believable! She is not just a pretty face; she is a movie star!

Bottom 5 Actors No blurbs for these as the list speaks for itself

Will Smith

Idris Elba

Mel Gibson

Kevin Costner

Samuel L Jackson

Honorable mention-Jodie Foster and Angelina Jolie

Here are some of the films I either watched for the first time or I hunkered down for a rewatch!

New to my eyes:

The Bat 1959 – 5 – Great black and white classic with the master, Vincent Price

The Psychopath 1966 – 4 – Hard to watch vintage horror, the film does not match the title

Nightmare City 1980 – 1 – Listed as the first fast moving zombie film from Italy, it does not have zombies in it and it is simply a terrible film!

Black Swan 2010 – 5 – This was a recommendation to me as I never succumbed to the fervor surrounding the movie when it came out. It was meh, and the acting and story are weak

Slumber Party Massacre 2021 – 2 – I was surprised I had missed this so-called remake from a 1980s slasher classic. This is a remake that should not have been

Rewatches:

P2 2007 – 6 – I’ve seen this small horror film several times. It’s a horror gem, and must watch

Abbot & Costello meet Frankenstein 1948 – 4 – Nostalgia indeed, never my cup of tea

Arsenic & Old Lace 1944 – 3 – This Cary Grant classic has its moments, but too few of them

Game Night 2018 – 3  – This romp with Hamm and Zach is a celluloid silly

Harold & Kumar 2004 - 6.5 – A true early 2000s comedy classic, a great escape

There’s Something About Mary 1998 - 6 – A late 90s comedy gem and a great distraction

What’s Up Doc? 1972 – 3 – An early 70s comedy with Ryan and Streisand - yuck

Zoolander 2001 – 7 - 8 – One of our favorite R rated comedies – Stiller rules

The Thing 1982 – 9 - 9.5 We saw this at the theatre – John Carpenter’s amazing horror classic!

Species 1995 – 5 – This creative but sloppy sci-fi is for a select audience of science fiction films

Disturbia 2007 - 7.5 - 8.5 – An overall good to great film, and a sentimental favorite of ours!

My Bloody Valentine 1981 - Classic 80s slasher with an interesting twist!

My Bloody Valentine 3D 2009 – 7 – A great reboot of the 80’s classic! A must watch for horror fans!

As Above, So Below 2014 – 7 - 9 – This is an interesting POV style film shot mostly underground. Great pace and style and one of Mykal’s favorites!

Annabelle 2014 – 7 – The one that started an incredible universe! Great cast and story along with dialogue and pace! Retro vibe!

And in TV

We will share a more detailed review on Mr. Robot and The Bear in our next Sprinkler. Here are our ratings:

Mr. Robot – 2015

We rate the four seasons:

Season 1 – 8

Season 2 – 7

Season 3 – 8

Season 4 – 7

This creative, alarming and mind scratching series put Rami Malek on the map! A must watch for anyone who loves deep TV series.

Find Mr. Robot on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and other platforms

The Bear – 2022

We rate the first three seasons:

Season 1 - 8

Season 2 - 9

Season 3 - 9

The flashbacks and stand-alone character’s episodes and emotional claustrophobia drive this show to new heights. Looking forward to the next season!

Severance - 2022

Severance elevated to its second season and we have two episodes in the can. It was three long years for fans of Apple TV’s Severance as it returned on January 17, 2024. This unusual TV show headed by an amazing cast including Adam Scott is a must watch for anyone that enjoys smart, well-acted and thought-provoking shows! A side note is how interesting it is to see Adam Scott knock his dramatic role out of the park. My recollection of Scott is the brother in Step Brothers and to see his progression to a serious actor is quite amazing! Scott doesn’t disappoint in this sophomore season and neither does the rest of the stellar cast! The show buzzes along in episode one as we see where the severed stars are after five months in their time has passed. The first episode moves this new look forward with the second season wrapping up where we left off and where we are headed. As Mykal stated, they have caught us up after episode two, which is brilliantly observed! Mykal and I watched both of the new episodes together and it is one of my life’s simple pleasures. I tend to want to talk and comment as the episodes unfold. I have to bite my tongue and save the comments for after the specific episode where we can share our takes.

The other show on our radar is the last season of Better Call Saul. It’s hard to believe that two people like Mykal and I who loved Breaking Bad, and possibly loved Better Call Saul slightly more have not watched that final season. We are both eclectic and we both have been waiting for the perfect time to watch it. I sense the time is coming very soon, and we look forward to a very special watch. As Mykal would say, it’s Saul good, man! Update, we watched the first episode of the last season of Better Call Saul, and it was awesome! We will review once we have completed the entire season.

Severance Season 2 ratings: The entire season one finished as a 9 for each of us as well.

We have rated the first six episodes of season two a 9 for each one

Music

We listen to our music exclusively on Spotify Premium.

We listened to so much amazing music in 2024! Mykal and I are crazy music buffs and fans and logged over 40,000 minutes each of listening in the year that was! We continue with our voracious music appetite as we consume tons of music as the year moves forward. Mykal does a great job of sharing random songs throughout the week, and I share tracks too! It’s cool to grab a song he sends and listen to it in the moment. This year the shares have been timely and very personal. Music drives both of us, and it’s a great way to add flavor to any day part. Mykal and I always play music when we are writing and working on our production company. Hell, music can even make doing chores and errands seem fun. Well, almost! We listened to some new music, lots of old music and all in between. We also attended a concert in Mesa. The concert was Helmet’s 30th Anniversary of their Betty album. More on the concert below.

Some new stuff:

The band Sweet, famous for Love is Like Oxygen, Fox on the Run and Ballroom Blitz released two new singles. The new singles are titled Circus. Interestingly they released a regular single and instrumental version of same track. A very cool touch. I give the tracks a 6! They are cool rock songs and they are new, rock n roll is not dead.

Black Label Society released two new tracks; Lord Humongous, title track of their upcoming album and The Gallows. Both tracks are very similar. The edge of early BLS is missing. Still cool as its new rock. Rating both songs a 5. Black Label Society is a metal band formed in 1998 in L.A.

I have also been listening to tons of Kid Cudi, Puddle of Mudd and Mac Miller. Mykal is the impetus of the increased listening for those artists. Kid Cudi and Mac Miller are not in my typical rock listening rotation but I have really enjoyed their change of pace. Both artists have released truly unique music with Mac Miller having been a musical savant. I first came across Kid Cudi in the Ti West film X. He was a natural in the film, and Mykal turned me onto his music and his unique sound is a great addition to my music catalog. Rounding out my heavy rotation for February was Puddle of Mudd. Puddle was formed in 1991, the same year that brought us Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Their sound is more rock, than alternative. Mykal and I have always dug this group, and their idyllic lyrics, and hard charging sound fit many moments in life! Front man Wes Scantlin has a unique voice which is perfect for Mudd’s rock sound! I look forward to listening to more groups that I may have given less playtime to in the coming months!

The Concert   February 2025

Helmet’s Wilma’s Rainbow 30th anniversary Tour. Nile Theater, built in 1924.

Mykal and I attended a kick ass rock concert as February came to a close. The group was Helmet, and the venue was a very intimate location in downtown Mesa. The Nile Theater was opened in 1924, which is very hard to imagine. We arrived about 30 minutes prior to Helmet taking the stage, and intentionally missed the two opening acts. The venue is standing only, and the interior of the building appears to have maintained at least two of the original brick walls. It was a simple layout and very cool. Parking, entering the show and exiting the concert were amazingly efficient and quick. The parking and exiting took about four minutes total! The show was also reasonably priced! I would attend more concerts if they all had the same outstanding variables! The audience was comprised of mostly men, and the age range was from young adults to older guys like me. The place was full but not packed and there was ample space to see the band and move around. There was a sprinkling of females as well. Helmet, labeled as an alternative metal band was formed in 1989. Their first album was released in 1990. Lead vocalist and lead guitarist Page Hamilton is the founding member as well as the only remaining original member of the band. The group is a four-piece band, with an amazingly tight sound, which was pointed out by Mykal. I have been listening to Helmet since the early 90s as I loved their unique sound which was different than the so-called grunge music that dominated the 1990s.

A few notes from this awesome show:

Played songs from the Betty album for the first 50 minutes.

From there they mixed it up and played an eclectic list of songs from their catalog and a couple of covers. Page stated they like to mix up the second half of their shows as they tour. The band has just finished 25 shows in Europe before returning to the states for the same number of concerts. Once done with the U.S. gigs, they head to South America for 25 more!

The concert was a tight 98 minutes with the band starting at 9p as listed.

Hard charging. Loud. Great musicianship. Vocals were hard to hear for most songs, still totally awesome! It was extremely cool to see this concert with my son! My ears were ringing after the show and well into the next day, and I loved it! Seeing a show like this, watching the energy from the band and observing the audience sharing an event made me want to shout, this is America!

Check out these playlists on Spotify:

The first one is my Helmet playlist. This is a short but sweet list from the 1990s alternative metal band Helmet. The playlist consisting of 10 tracks and coming in at just over 30 minutes captures the sound of Helmet that Mykal and I really dig. This band has 12 albums, since 1990 and their sound changed drastically over the years. Betty was Helmet’s most successful album. The term Betty was brought to us by the 1970s according to many, based on Betty Rubble of the Flintstones animated TV show.

Betty’s Helmet:

The second playlist:

Mac Miller was an incredibly talented and unique artist that left this Earth far too soon. Mykal is an elite level Mac Miller fan and the playlist below is one of the most comprehensive Mac Miller lists around. I have really grown to be a big fan of Miller’s and owe that to Mykal. Mac’s versatility as a vocalist ad musician is outpaced only by his song writing. This playlist comes in at just over nine hours. Give this amazing playlist a listen! This is a great one to come back to from time to time and enjoy like a fine wine.

Mac Miller:

Rock and Roll Image of the Month! (RRIM)

Robert Plant circa early 1970s. Simply one of THE rock voices of our century. Dazed and confused? Or a whole lotta love?

Positivity Corner

Studies have shown over the years that positive thinking is important for our mental and physical well-being. Check out this article from Johns Hopkins.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Aging Well

Here’s heartwarming news: People with a family history of heart disease who also had a positive outlook were one-third less likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event within five to 25 years than those with a more negative outlook. That’s the finding from Johns Hopkins expert Lisa R. Yanek, M.P.H., and her colleagues. The finding held even in people with family history who had the most risk factors for coronary artery disease, and positive people from the general population were 13 percent less likely than their negative counterparts.

Hope and Your Heart

The mechanism for the connection between health and positivity remains murky, but researchers suspect that people who are more positive may be better protected against the inflammatory damage of stress. Another possibility is that hope and positivity help people make better health and life decisions and focus more on long-term goals. Studies also find that negative emotions can weaken immune response.

What is clear, however, is that there is definitely a strong link between “positivity” and health. Additional studies have found that a positive attitude improves outcomes and life satisfaction across a spectrum of conditions—including traumatic brain injury, stroke and brain tumors.

Can You Boost Your Bright Side?

Although a positive personality is something we’re born with and not something we can inherently change, Yanek says, there are steps you can take to improve your outlook and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Simply smile more

A University of Kansas study found that smiling—even fake smiling—reduces heart rate and blood pressure during stressful situations. Try a few minutes of YouTube humor therapy when you’re stomping your feet waiting in line or fuming over a work or family situation. It’s difficult not to smile while watching a favorite funny video.

Practice reframing

Instead of stressing about a traffic jam, for instance, appreciate the fact that you can afford a car and get to spend a few extra minutes listening to music or the news, accepting that there is absolutely nothing you can do about the traffic.

Build resiliency

Resiliency is the ability to adapt to stressful and/or negative situations and losses. Experts recommend these key ways to build yours:

Maintain good relationships with family and friends.

Accept that change is a part of life.

Take action on problems rather than just hoping they disappear or waiting for them to resolve themselves.

Our mantra of being cool to one another starts with us taking care of ourselves and showing kindness in our day to day.

Be cool to one another and just as importantly; be cool to yourself!

Gratitude Shout Out

This year has started out with many challenges for Mykal and I. I know we are not alone, as life has its challenges for everyone. I can feel sorry for myself at times, and that doesn’t do me or anyone in my circle any good. I have been working on breathing exercises and getting out in the fresh air for walk abouts. I have been better at journaling as well. I have stepped it up as far as living in the moment and being present. I’m grateful for having access to so much great information, and will continue to work on myself. I’m grateful for all I have, including an amazing son in Mykal!

I have work to do, and I want to be a better father, man and person. I challenge everyone to find the good and remove the drama and the negative.

Cheers to all our psychos!  What are you grateful for?

Commentary

Thoughts of the month, as we move forward.

We stay true to our mandate of leaving politics at the door.

I’m not preaching here; it is simply as the heading for this section reads, my commentary. After this month I will be commenting on day-to-day life, interactions with the public as well as experiences at restaurants, online shops and even grocery shopping!

I have disconnected from the news cycles almost completely. I had already reduced the amount of news I consumed about five years ago! Post the most recent presidential election results I felt I needed to extract myself from the news pretty much completely. Mykal does a fantastic job with keeping me up to speed on major current events. Its more palatable to me to hear the so-called headlines from my son.

I am flabbergasted by the way news coverage has evolved, or should I say devolved? There is so much information out there; social media, cable news, local news, news apps and others. As we have grown to know so much information is either opinion or downright untruths. I’m not here to tell anyone what to watch and not watch or follow. I am suggesting that getting outside and enjoying fresh air, reading a book, reaching out to a friend or family member, organizing a living space, or jumping into a hobby are far better ways to spend our time. I know times are as challenging as they have been in decades, take a deep breath and focus on living in the moment. I am working on the being present piece and also breathing exercises. I know Mykal and I practice being cool to one another whenever we are out and about. I want to end this commentary by giving a shout out to Mykal. Mykal and I volunteered a couple weeks ago and it was an incredible experience. Mykal shared feedback afterwards and he sincerely appreciated helping those in need and working as a team with those we did not know. I can hang my hat on the fact my son is a good person and citizen!

We wish everyone a great March, be safe and have fun!

Some Sports

We are adjusting our Some Sports area and will be sharing sports headlines from around the three major leagues.

We will continue to keep an eye on the major Wisconsin sports teams.

Green Bay Packers  Milwaukee Bucks  Milwaukee Brewers

Sports notes:

The Green Bay Packers are preparing for the NFL draft. This year will be unique as the NFL Draft is being held in Green Bay Wisconsin! The Packers have needs at defensive end pass rusher, cornerback and wide receiver.

The Milwaukee Bucks finished the month of February in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 33-25. They traded Middleton and picked up several players including Kyle Kuzma to shake things up. 24 games to go in regular season.

The Milwaukee Brewers have kicked off their Spring Training season. The Brewers start their regular season home opener on March 31st at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

We will share other sport headlines in subsequent Sprinklers.

Random Headlines & Stuff

Let’s get to some weird and interesting stuff!

-       Pete Davidson is reportedly having the majority of his tattoos removed. Mykal broke this news to me and subsequent stories are confirming as such. Davidson states that the process to remove his enormous inventory of tattoos is basically burning a layer of skin off where the tattoo was located. He states that the removal process is far more painful than getting the tattoos – no shit Sherlock!

-       Mykal has been getting some new ink in the last couple of months. He has gotten some really cool additions to his tattoo landscape! I only have one tattoo, but plan on getting another by year’s end. Mykal will take my idea and lay out a design. It’s a very unique way to express one’s self.  As Van Halen sang, Tattoo Tattoo!

-       In diet news, eating this fruit every day can reduce depression risk per Harvard. What is it? I thought it might be blueberries, I was wrong! It is any of the citrus fruits!  An orange a day keeps the doctor away?

-       A 95-year-old grandma’s advice for battling depression, anxiety and other mental health struggles: I’m paraphrasing but it boils down to the little things. Living in the moment. Being kind to ourselves. Taking small steps each day and being good to ourselves. It’s about letting go of the past, and focusing on today. That is sage advice from a senior!

-       I’ve seen this type of story before, and it can be so beneficial for so many. There is a 15-day rule that we can apply to make a difference in our lives. It boils down to waiting 15 days before making non-essential purchases. This affords us time to think about the purchase and removes the impulse many feel when shopping online or in person. A penny saved is a penny earned!

-       I remember back in the day there was a period of time as a kid that an ice cream truck would slowly cruise our 91-home neighborhood. The image of a male ice cream cone with a large vanilla swirl for hair and a cone for a face was weird. The name of the ice cream truck was even more strange; Mister Softee! I’m surprised I was not traumatized from that! Make sure your children are safe from Mister Softee and the like!

-       40 years ago, Steve Jobs said there’s one simple habit that separates high performers from those that may fall short. He believed that those that succeed are the ones that are self-managing; they don’t need to be managed. How prophetic indeed, and this serves us at work, home and even play!

-       In Paris, thieves used a credit card from a wallet they stole to buy a lottery ticket. The thieves hastily left the shop where they bought the ticket. The man whose card was used was given all they left behind including the ticket. Get this, the ticket was a winner and the prize was $523,000! The man who was robbed wants his wallet back and is willing to split the winnings with the thieves! Who says crime doesn’t pay!

-       Crow is not the only thing they ate at a wild game dinner in Pennsylvania. The other animals served for the feast besides the black bird were; coyote, wild boar, rabbit, bobcat, turtle, alligator and more. Talk about being game for a meal?!

-       And in historical news, there are new findings in the infamous Jack the Ripper case!  New genetic analysis may finally reveal the identity of Jack the Ripper. A shawl that was supposedly recovered from one of the murder scenes back in the late 1800s, had DNA samples tested. The genetic tests point to a 23-year-old Polish barber. The barber was a suspect from way back in the day. The problem with the findings is that there are as many experts that disagree with the results as those that concur with the results. The shawl was recovered in 1888, in White Chapel London. We don’t know the validity of the article of women’s clothing nor do we know if the item was preserved properly. The brutal murders of five women in White Chapel happened over 137 years ago. The so-called Jack the Ripper has never been identified in all that time. It is an amazingly compelling story that has brought us books, movies and a cavalcade of articles for over a century!

Just because it’s taking time, doesn’t mean it’s not happening!

Interesting individual of the month [IIM]

This month’s interesting individual is Wes Craven.

Wesley Earl Craven was an amazing film director, writer and producer! Wes was primarily attached to the horror genre and more specifically the so-called slasher films. That would be selling him short when you explore his filmography.

Wes left this movie we call life too soon, and passed in 2015. He had two children in the 1960s and his son is a writer and director, with his daughter being a singer and song writer for the group The Chapin Sisters.

Wes Craven is one of our favorite directors of all time! His creativity, direction as well as his ability to spin a yarn drew us to his films. He is on many horror film aficionados horror favorite directors lists. He is on our Mount Rushmore of horror directors!

Wes stated that ideas that come out of families which are fractured or disturbed in some ways are the most profoundly terrifying things to him. Craven went on to say that unfortunately often it’s the parents themselves that are most frightening to children.

Wes shared that Alfred Hitchcock was one of his influences among a short list of others.

Craven was an academic, but left for a more lucrative profession; a pornographic film director. Craven himself stated he made many hardcore X-rated films under pseudonyms.

Wes’s first mainstream feature was Last House on the Left. Craven stated that he assumed the film would not receive a large release, which gave him freedom to go into areas he would have stayed away from. The film ended up having a wide release and Wes was ostracized for it’s incredibly violent nature! Wes attempted to write non-horror films but due to lack of interest in those ideas he returned to horror. His next feature The Hills Have Eyes, which was shot in the Nevada Desert confirmed he was a horror director and film maker. One of Craven’s most notable films A Nightmare on Elm Street had a non-credited scene directed by his longtime friend Sean S Cunningham. Cunningham was integral in making Wes’s first feature. Craven was also recognized for bringing Johnny Depp to the big screen in Nightmare.

His film catalog contains over 20 movies! Mykal and I were drawn to his Nightmare on Elm Street films as well as the incredible Scream franchise!  It was clear that Wes incorporated the human condition in his horror films. The movies he made explored the characters and what made them who they were. His style was different from so many horror films of the 1980s and 1990s. The movies he was directly involved in as writer and director stand out from the crowded landscape of those two decades. I recently rewatched A Nightmare on Elm Street Dream Warriors and gained a new appreciation for that sequel! Wes Craven brought horror fans and movie buffs a like so much joy, scares and thought-provoking moments! RIP Wes Craven.

A short list of his films we recommend:   All available on various streaming platforms

Last House on the Left

The Hills Have Eyes

A Nightmare on Elm Street

The Serpent and the Rainbow

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare
