Film – Music - Wellness – Commentary – Some Sports and Random Headlines

Let’s start with a film quote we love:

“No matter where you are going, it’s the wrong place!”

Tobe Hooper

Before we jump into the rest of this Sprinkler, we would like to give a shout out to our Psycho Studio’s podcast! We continue to evolve with this piece and moving forward our podcast will include video! Septembers was a hit! We will focus on one film we went to see at the theatre and explore a uniquely deep dive. We continue with our Psycho Studio’s Scale – which is our movie - music scoring scale which is 1-Psycho (10).  Available on our YouTube Channel as well as Spotify.

Film

Let’s start with some brief reviews. Reminder, we utilize our Psycho Studio’s Scale (scale of 1-Psycho-10 for rating films.)

Speak No Evil 2022 and 2024 – these films were very entertaining. The 2022 version is the original and brought to us from the Danish. The 2024 version is a very quick remake brought to us by Blumhouse Productions. Check out our September podcast for a deep dive with unique perspectives. The contrast between the two films is beyond interesting. The American version is more sedate with a so-called happier ending and much better acting. Check out the podcast for our scores on the Psycho Scale!

Brides of Dracula 1960 – This Hammer film directed by Terence Fisher is one of those Hammer classics with a twist. We see Peter Cushing in his typical Hammer role but the rest of the cast and film is uniquely different. Not one of my favorite Hammer horror films, but it’s a great blast from the past watch. This comes in as a 5 on the Psycho Scale.

Homicidal 1961 – William Castle’s interesting study into murder within a family is an interesting classic watch. I can’t say much without giving a lot of the film away. It’s black and white and red all over. This film garnishes a 4, but the classic nature should double that.

Two on a Guillotine 1965 – This 1960’s hidden gem is an interesting take on multiple film tropes. Directed by William Conrad, it has a cavalcade of stars and character actors from that era. Connie Stevens is the lead along with (famous for his Disney films) Dean Jones. I rewatched this for the first time since I was a kid. That was a long time ago. The film did not hold up well, but is black and white campy fun. Two on a G hits with a solid 3. It’s funny that a memory of a film can be so much better than the actual movie itself.

Dorian Gray 1970 – Starring Helmut Berger is based on the Oscar Wilde novel of the same title. This is another blast from the past for me as I saw it once, when I was not quite a teenager. It was scandalous back then and I recall bragging to my friends how risqué it was. The film does not hold up well, the acting is paper thin, the story is all over the place and the English setting and vibe is awkward in many ways. The novel is brilliant and introduced in 1890! This film comes in at a 3. It’s worth a watch for all film buffs!

Tentacles 1977 – This is an odd one. Two years after Jaws was released this film is part of the plethora of low budget films that pitted man against a number of sea creatures. It had a really weird cast of classic old time mega stars including John Huston and Henry Ford. The special effects are weak at best but it is campy fun! The film did decent at the box office. If you haven’t seen it, check it out for some good old school film fun. The Psycho Score? How about a 2?!

Psycho II 1983 – This sequel some 20 plus years from the original is a quirky, weird and somewhat gross feature. Anthony Perkins reprises his role as Norman Bates. Vera Miles returns from the original as Marion Crane’s sister. Meg Tilly, Jennifer’s sister has one of the lead roles along with our favorite character actor Robert Loggia. The film did very well at the box office and gross revenue was around $30 million! When you are following a masterpiece that is the original Hitchcock Psycho how much can we expect? It’s an interesting watch – rewatch for Psycho fans! Psycho Scale score is a solid 5.

Rabid 2019 – This film is based on David Cronenberg’s twisted and ground breaking horror feature from 1977. The film is shot in Canada, and mirrors the first one for most acts. The passage of 40 plus years are incorporated into the adjustments in the story, but the film is very similar. For horror fans this body horror feature is a great Saturday night watch. Psycho Scale score is another 5!

Dead Sea 2024 – This low budget, and limited release on the ocean so-called horror film is entertaining if you have nothing else to watch. The acting is meh, the story is predictable and the dialogue is weak at best. I give this film a 2!

Trap 2024 – M. Night Shyamalan brings us a film that is Silence of the Lambs meets a Taylor Swift concert! The big budget thriller which came in at $30 million to make, has grossed over $80 million! M. Night is clearly back after releasing several hits including Knock at the Cabin. We love a good twist, but this film is wonky and forced. If you love female pop music with an underlying serial killer story this feature is for you! Josh Hartnett returns in a lead role that is one of those love or hate characters. My Psycho Scale score is a 3! What a twist!

Man! What a month of watching random horror features from multiple decades! Most of the films are weak at best but movies are like pizza to me. Hell, it’s a movie and a nice escape good or bad! That’s why we love movies!

Music

Review of Chevelle’s album – Niratias. 2021. The title is an acronym – Nothing is Real and This is a Simulation. Mykal turned me onto this album and I’m so glad he did! He - We share songs and albums throughout a given week and this rock album dare I say ROCKS! We loved Chevelle back in the day. It seemed like their later albums were not the Chevelle that we were enamored with. The original line up of the group was all brothers and the name of the band was derived by their dad’s love of Chevelles. This fairly recent album kicks ass. A few of the singles that stand out are Verruckt. Self-Destructor. Peach. The whole album is really special! Psycho Scale for music 1-Psycho (10) is an 8!

Jane’s addiction new single True Love was ironically released a couple days after the group announced the cancelling of future shows. Lead singer Perry Ferrell and guitarist Dave Navarro got into a physical fight on stage at a convert a few nights before the release of this mellow and under toned single. The group has had infrequent issues with getting along. The single is a 4 for me, I appreciate the new music from the group but it doesn’t sound like Jane’s to me.

The Offspring’s new single – Make it All Right landed a few days ago. The new track is popish with a heavy emphasis on background vocals. It was a fun listen, but not my cup of tea. We enjoyed their old music at the right time. For me, I need to keep them separated! This track plays out as a 4.

Led Zeppelin – Their first album which is self-titled was raw and raucous in 1969! It’s a rock masterpiece and is a very short album for 1960’s and 1970’s standards. Nine songs clocking in at 44 minutes is like an appetizer to the rest of their catalog. I’m a huge Zeppelin fan and they are in my top five favorite rock groups of all time. It’s funny that I do not listen to them enough! I’m going to start a Led Zeppelin Sunday before football playlist! Look for it in our next newsletter! Every track on this album kills it, with Dazed and Confused as well as Communication Breakdown ripping your face off! For those that like to rock – give this album a spin or a re-listen! Psycho Scale score is a 10!

Av7X – Avenged Sevenfold. This somewhat obscure rock band hit the scene in 2002! It’s hard to believe they have been rocking that long. They suffered a tragedy when their drummer died far too young. It’s ironic that Led Zeppelin had a similar fate with their drummer. Led Zep decided to call it quits once their drummer had passed. AV7X found a new band member and have been able to move forward with amazing new music! This group is one of Mykal’s very favorite groups if not his number one band! We’ve been listening to them since around 2005 when City of Evil hit the shelves. Nightmare, Hail to the King and Life is But a Dream are my favorite albums by this uniquely hard driving rock band. They provide amazing vocals by M. Shadows along with his elective lyrics and musicianship! The band has this retro vibe with contemporary underpinnings! We’ve seen them twice in concert and their incredible recorded sound is captured and on display sevenfold! Those three albums come in with an average score of a 9 for me! The laugh in the track Nightmare is something we have to use in a horror film!

Check out this playlist, Chevelle goes Vroom on Spotify –– 14 tracks – almost an hour

Wellness

When it comes to health and wellness, it’s the smallest and consistent efforts that bring the best results. Sadly, too many of us are taking our well-being for granted.

If you wish to lead a happy and healthy life, it’s high time that you start giving your well-being the importance it deserves. Thomas Edison summed it up perfectly,

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

We’ve got some tips for you as well that will help you to lead a better and healthy life.

The list:

1.     Right when you wake up drink a bottle of water

In Japan, people drink two glasses of water as the first thing in the morning. Interestingly, it has the greatest overall longevity being the only country with over 50,000 centenarians. Whether it’s in the water practice or something else, we can learn a few tricks from Japanese to improve our health.

Benefits of drinking water in the morning:

·       Rehydrates your body

·       Flushes out toxins

·       Improves metabolism

·       Increases brain power

·       Boosts the immune system

2. Pop outside regardless of weather and take a deep breath of fresh air

Don’t you feel happier when the Sun is shining and you get to spend some time outside? I’m sure you do because I personally love it. However, with many of us spending the major chunk in our stuffy offices, it has become a rare deal to go out and spend some time with nature. Research shows that getting fresh air affects the levels of serotonin that make us feel good about ourselves.

Benefits of getting some fresh air:

·       Good for lungs and skin

·       Improves blood pressure and heart rate

·       Relieves stress and anxiety

·       Makes you happier and energetic

·       Strengthens the immune system

3. Listen to music that is upbeat and makes you happy

Music is known to evoke all kinds of emotions. It is actually very actionable and can be used to manipulate your mood. Make a playlist of your favorite upbeat and happy songs and blast it off in the morning to set the tone for the rest of the day.

Tip: Keep updating your playlist every week

Benefits of listening to music you love:

·       Improves mental focus

·       Soothes and relaxes blood vessels

·       Makes you happier

·       Reduces stress levels

·       Gets dopamine flowing

4. Try to do something new a few times a week

Routines are boring and unhealthy. Doing the same thing over and over again is going to bring monotony quite soon in your life. And it isn’t exciting to be living such a life, right? Try doing something new every single day — it’s actually healthy. Don’t complicate, start with small things like taking a different route to work, having coffee instead of tea, and more.

Benefits of attempting new things:

·       Makes life more exciting

·       Brings you out of your comfort zone

·       Good for brain and mental strength

·       Makes you more confident and courageous

·       Sense of accomplishment

Get better hold of your daily tasks with a work management software. Or go old school and use a to-do list on a legal pad, or notes on your phone – computer.

5. Consume more fruits and green veggies

Those who think they have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness. About 70–80% of health is eating the right food at the right time. Understand your body type and its nutritional needs. Leafy greens and fruits are a great source of natural fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables — it’s both easy and delicious.

Benefits of eating fruits and veggies:

·       Healthy weight maintenance

·       Controls blood sugar

·       Reduces LDL also known as bad cholesterol

·       Normalizes bowel movements

·       Protects your heart and improves skin tone

6. Mix it up and drink green tea and juices in place of coffee or energy drinks now and then

We don’t understand the gratification people get by bragging about their addiction to coffee (or tea). Having a cup or two is fine, but gulping down seven to eight cups of caffeine isn’t doing you any good. To bid goodbye to coffee-addiction, replace coffee with green tea or natural juices. Loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, they can have powerful effects on your health.

Benefits of green tea and juices

·       Catechin in green tea prevents cell damage and promotes cell growth

·       Amino acid L-theanine improve brain function

·       Prevents skin aging and Alzheimer and Parkinson disease

·       Lowers the risk of Type 2 Diabetes

·       Helps you lose weight and lowers the risk of obesity

7. Try probiotics

Probiotics are a great way to boost the immune system and improve the skin health. In simple words, probiotics are live microorganisms similar to ones found in human gut, also known as ‘good bacteria’. Popping up a daily probiotic would scare off pathogens and improves the immune system. So, provide your body with the number of probiotics it needs to maintain your well-being and sustain a healthy gut.

Benefits of probiotics:

·       Keeps your gut clean

·       Boosts your immune system

·       Protects against hostile bacteria to prevent infection

·       Prevents various allergies and Eczema

8. It’s all about posture – work to sit up straight

The way you stand, sit, and walk is also a part of your well-being and health care. If you are always slouching or walking like a zombie, you need to take care of your posture because not doing so could result in physical deformities and other health problems. To maintain a good posture, place your body in a neutral position so that your pelvis, trunk, and head are in alignment. It is an optimal position that helps you to work efficiently even for long hours.

Benefits of a good posture:

·       Keeps bones and joints in correct alignment

·       Decreases stress on ligaments

·       Prevents fatigue

·       Prevents backache and muscular pain

·       Contributes to a good appearance

9. Listen to meditative music before sleeping or nature sounds like ocean waves, rain forest and the like

Just like you should start your day with some kickass music likewise, it’s a great practice to end your day with soothing and calming music. To maintain optimum energy levels, you must get a sleep of at least a good 7 to 8 hours.

Benefits of listening to music or nature sounds hitting the sack:

·       Lowers stress

·       Reduces fatigue

·       Better sleep

·       Reduces depression

Before you start applying these tips, make sure you develop a firm belief in them and aren’t doing them just for the heck of it. If you aren’t happy from inside while doing something, it’s not going to do any good to you.

To lead a healthy lifestyle, it’s vital to get your mind on your side. Once you’ve achieved this, everything else will be more natural for you.

Psycho Studios wants to make sure our psychos are taking care of themselves. Remember, we have to take care of ourselves first in order to be there for others.Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. This can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact.

The key to a healthy life, is a healthy mind.

Commentary

Summer is winding down in most parts of the country. In the 30 years I have lived in the Desert Southwest, this summer has been beyond brutal! (It’s National Pronunciation Day today as I write this!)

I always focused on the seven excellent weather months and dealt with the five months of summer. I always refrained from using the word hot, and did my best to stay out of the heat during the hottest parts of the day. Having a pool, as much of a bitch it is to maintain always made the summer more tolerable. When my son’s mother and I first moved to the desert from the Midwest there would be so-called monsoons, which were mild thunderstorms. The storms would roll in over the Superstition Springs Mountains and provide spectacular light shows and much needed moisture. Those storms came with less and less frequency to the point it is a rarity for us to get even a handful over the summer months. Haboobs, or sand storms started to show up and they just made a mess out of things. On top of that they reminded me of the unwatchable so-called remake of The Mummy with Mr. Cruise. The weather became predictable in the summer, and regardless of the diminishing storms and rain the heat almost always broke when September was on the calendar. Many of the Arizona natives would complain about it being in the 90s and into the 80s as we transitioned from September to October. Hell, when you are coming out of the hottest months of the year those temps felt Spring-like! This summer is different. The heat simply has not let up to speak of. I like to use the Old Farmer’s Almanac to check on 30-day forecasts – which are typically accurate. The summer just dragged on. It was relentless. The worst summer I have ever experienced. The scientists say its climate change; as we refrain from political speak, I will veer from that inevitability. I take a deep breath and realize many many people have it so much worse. I will stay away from the litany of issues in this country and the world. We had a break in the weather about a week ago, and when this happens, we have always been home free. The high temps have returned. Deep breaths again. I know we will make it. It’s that the constant heat seems to have sucked a lot of the energy and positivity out of me. I’m not going to let it defeat me. No matter what, October brings cooler temps no matter what and the promise of Halloween! There is football in the air. The baseball playoffs are right around the corner. The NBA season is close to tip off. I’m forcing myself to get outside and go on walk abouts. I am maintaining my hydration with mostly water [does some alcohol count?]. My son and I are on a very unique and creative journey. Speaking of my son, he is an amazing young man. I’m very grateful to be his father. I’m also grateful for all I have. I’m focused on an amazing next four months! We move forward. We lick our wounds and we appreciate the little things!

Here’s to a great October for one and all!

Some Sports

Green Bay Packers

Update

Green Bay Packers

Cheesy Update - Packers fall to their hated divisional rival the Vikings in Green Bay, 31-29! Love looked rusty throwing for 389 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions! Last Packers QB to have that stat line? Brett Favre 1999.

The Green Bay Packers traveled to Brazil to kick off the NFL’s 105th season! The game was a nail biter for the most part as my son and I watched in anticipation. It was odd that the NFL clash between the Eagles and Packers was being played on a Friday evening! Jordan Love and the offense looked rusty and did not execute well in the red zone. The foreign field was an embarrassment! The Eagles prevailed. The insult to injury, literally was the fact that Jordan Love got injured on the second to the last play of the game! It looked bad, and Love was screaming aloud in pain! Packer’s fans feared the worse! The team returned home and we waited with baited breath! The great news is that Love’s injury was an MCL sprain, grade 1.5 and will sit him for just a few weeks!

A few days before the Packers were headed to Brazil, they traded for a third string quarterback from the Tennessee Titans. Oddly enough, the Packers had picked up a place kicker a few days before the QB trade from the same team. The quarterback in question? Malik Willis. He was a third-round pick of the Titans and had played three regular season games in his rookie season. He went 0-3 and looked like a rookie with a lot to learn. The Packers cut their two backup quarterbacks in Pratt and Clifford. What would the Packers do with Love being injured and out for who knows how long? (Clifford was brought back to the practice squad).

We fast forward to today, and the Packers are still lacking Love. Willis started in Green Bay against the Colts and traveled to the team that gave up on him, the Titans. Willis and the Packers won both games and head into week four against their rivals the Vikings. Coach LaFleur coached up Willis and the QB and the rest of the team rallied! I’m still pinching myself over those two wins! It looks like Love is returning for the clash against the idiots in purple in Green Bay. The Packers have a reliable back up QB and some possible trade bait come the off season. It’s a long season, it would be even longer if we lost our Love, of the game!

We are sticking with our way to early predictions!

Previously: Our not too early prediction for the Green Bay Packer’s 2024 season;

Me – 12-5. Mykal – 13-4

Cheers to a great NFL season! Carry the G!

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks are looking to run it back with keeping their core starters intact and Doc Rivers leading the team. Darvin Ham has been brought back as an assistant and will most likely take over for Rivers when he decides to exit stage left. We look for the Bucks to bounce back this season – staying healthy is key! The Fear the Deer season kicks off on 10.23.2024. It’s interesting to see how little the Bucks did or didn’t do in the off season. The Bucks are strapped for cash moves given the hefty contracts for their five key players. Giannis. Lillard. Lopez. Middleton. Portis. They picked up some bench players, and I don’t follow the League enough to share feedback about those pieces. The buzz is that Lillard is a different player and should return to form this season. His divorce is in his rear-view mirror. His move from Portland is a year removed. He has had an entire off season to know where he is playing and who he is playing with. With a revitalized Lillard and an amazing roster with a prepared Doc Rivers, the Bucks ceiling is very high!

Fear the Deer!

Milwaukee Brewers

Update

Milwaukee Brewers

Cold Suds Update - Brewers finished regular season 93-69! The Brewers led wire to wire in the National League Central Division! The Brewers take on the NY Mets in Milwaukee as they host the Wild Card game! The Wild Card series is tied 1-1!

Brewers – 90-67 – 23 games above 500!

The Brewers continue to crush this season. With new manager Pat Murphy, it’s awesome to see how great the Brew Crew is taking on this season! Craig Counsell flew the coup at the end of last season and moved over to the rival Chicago Cubs. The Brewers are currently in first place in the National League Central with five games remaining in the regular season! They are 10 games ahead of the Cubs. The last regular season game for the Brewers is 9.29. We will update this article before 10.1 when it drops. How far will the Brewers go? It has been a beautiful season! It has been even sweeter to see the former manager fall flat with the rival Cubs! The last time the Brewers were in a World Series was 1982. The Brewers are one of those few teams in the MLB that have never won the fall classic! Making the playoffs, and having a great regular season has been awesome. With the playoffs right around the corner, that thought will vanish with an eye on making it to the big dance! The Brewers are leading in many stat categories which demonstrate that in a five or seven game series, they can beat anyone! Pour one for the Brew Crew! Keep that head foamy!

Interesting individual of the month [IIM]

This month’s interesting individual is Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers – NFL Quarterback. 6 foot 2 inches tall. Right-handed. Great arm. Accuracy and velocity. Prides himself on not throwing interceptions. Is high on many stat lists for QBs in the history of the NFL. One Super Bowl ring. One NFC Championship ring. Several most valuable player awards. Selected to multiple pro bowls and has several all-pro selections.

Packer’s QB – 2005-2022. Started since 2008. Traded to Jets in 2023. Number 12.

Let’s start by saying Rodgers Wikipedia page reminds me of an actual Encyclopedia! Remember those? I imagine only if you are old like me!

He played for the Green Bay Packers from 2005-2022. He went late in the first round and was very disappointed how far he dropped in the first round. Rodgers sat for three seasons and watched future Hall of Famer Brett Favre. Rodgers took the Packers to the Super Bowl in 2011 and led the team to a victory over the Pittsburg Steelers!

Rodgers played for two coaches in Green Bay, McCarthy and LaFleur. Rodgers has been touted as one of the best to ever play the quarterback position.

This article could be multiple pages on its own. I’m going to refrain. As a die-hard Packer’s fan I watched Rodgers intently since his first start. I always appreciated what a great QB he was. As the last few years in Green Bay came to a close his image tarnished with me. Hell, his image is tarnished with many sports fans and casual football fans alike. When we look at his overall NFL record, his regular season win totals and accolades are incredible. He will be a first ballot Hall of Famer! When I reflect on his time in Packer’s Land, I look at his playoff record. The playoffs and the Super Bowl are what matter. Period. If you are a fan of a team that consistently loses or struggles with poor QB play it can seem like insanity for me to have soured on A-Rod. Rodger’s playoff record is 12-10. That is unacceptable. That is disappointing. That is a gut-punch! Aaron is 1-4 in NFC Championships. Those stats alone have made me sour on his play. I loved the way he played in the regular season. It became bittersweet every playoff run since the 2011 Super Bowl. Rodgers soured with the organization as did the organization sour on him. There was a messy divorce and the Packers traded A-Rod to the New York Jets. This was last season. Packers brought in a new era of Love, That’s another story!

As stated previously, this story could be 100 pages or more. Rodgers is peculiar. Rodgers stands for many many things I do not support. I find simply put, insane! We will leave that baggage for other publications. It was a great run with many expectations never realized. Like a good, cold glass of milk that is left on the kitchen countertop; The first and second gulps are super tasty! After the glass of moo juice sits, it becomes bitter and far less tasty or should we say spoiled?!
