Film – Music - Wellness – Commentary – Some Sports and Random Headlines

Film

Let’s get into some feature films!

We start with two quotes that are fitting for the film Longlegs:

Clowns can get away with murder.

Serial Killer

I think the FBI is the premier law enforcement agency in all of human history.

John F Kennedy

Longlegs - Rated R feature - $10 million budget - $57 million gross box office as of 8.1

Runtime - 101 minutes - Score - 4

Starring Nicolas Cage as Longlegs and Maika Monroe from It Follows

Written and directed by Osgood Perkins

Osgood Perkins wrote and directed an episode of Twilight Zone TV series in 2020

His father is Anthony Perkins - not that Anthony Perkins

Perkins has over a dozen acting credits including a small role in the 2002 flick Secretary with James Spader

Kiernan Shipka is the only known survivor of Longlegs - she from Mad Men fame as Draper's eldest child

Cage was also producer on the film

Shot in British Columbia – Canada over six to seven weeks

Guerilla Marketing was used by Neon - a tactic used for marketing The Blair Witch Project

Best opening weekend for an original horror movie in 2024 ($22 million)

Highest grossest weekend for Monroe as a lead actor and highest opening weekend for Cage since ($20 plus million) Ghost Rider sequel in 2012

The acting is excellent and Monroe is coming into her own as an actor, movie star!

Cage is great, in typical Cage style

The film was too busy for my tastes as it tackled: crime procedural, occult mystery, mind manipulation, Satanic worship & scary dolls. Way too much!

The film seems to borrow from Silence of the Lambs and other films in a way that is distracting to film buffs. Disappointing. Trying to be everything is often a way to be nothing.

Average film goers’ grade is a C+

The film was touted as being sick and twisted and unbelievably scary. I kept my expectations low. It was not a good movie, period. Oh well.

The Watchers - Rated PG13 - 102 minutes - M Knight Shyamalan

Score - 2 (Think: The Village)

Let's start off by saying What a twist!  I recall a Robot Chicken skit with M Knight's films and they consistently stated What a twist! M. Knight had taken a break from film making and returned with a vengeance with the movie Split (2016). The movie appeared to bring M. Knight back to the fold with an excellent story and cast coupled with great acting and dialogue. Then he brought us Glass, and I figured that was quite the regress. A few years passed and we were given Knock at the Cabin. This outdoors romp was entertaining and well-acted with a twisted story. I didn't go into The Watchers with any expectations, but I did not expect it to digress into The Village. It is a slow burn, which is fine but the dialogue was trite. The acting paper thin and the story droned on like an exhaust note from a high-performance vehicle cruising at freeway speeds. The movie really doesn't go anywhere and it’s frustrating to watch. We all knew a twist was coming at the end and in this case, I think the majority of the audience knew the twist was shit. The movie is about 15 minutes too long and the feeling I needed bug spray and a stiff drink has yet to leave me.

MaXXine - Rated R - 104 minutes - Ti West

Score - 6 (Sequel to X and part of the X trilogy)

We start this review with the fact that I dig Ti West and his film making style. He is an extremely versatile and talented film maker. He is old school, with being heavily involved in all aspects of the film making process. He writes, directs, edits and produces his films which harkens back to the days of yesteryear. I tempered my expectations and enthusiasm with this film. I was pleasantly surprised by X, having stumbled upon that great so-called horror film late one night on a Saturday. I totally dug the story, dialogue, music, cinematography, the cast as well as the way Ti brought to life a 1970s period piece. Pearl was interesting, and Mia Goth is one of my favorite actors currently splashed on the silver screen.  I'm not a fan of period pieces that are earlier than the 1950s, just my thing man. I appreciated the slow burn Pearl gave us and the descent into madness at the turn of the century.

With MaXXine I was excited to see the film based on the backstory, Mia's involvement and the prospect of seeing Ti do his thing in the 1980s. I am scoring this a 6 and that might be a tad high for me as I am basing it partially on the great time I have going to see films with Mr. Z (Mykal) and his girlfriend.

I felt there was almost too much going on, and this watered down the details of the main story. I liked the true crime aspect with the serial killer element playing underneath. Oddly enough Mr. Z (Mykal) and I have a treatment outline for a feature film that has a similar element but ours is pure fiction. I felt that the depiction of the 1980s was focused on the seedy under belly of Hollywood (understandably so) but was hoping for more discovery of the 1980s than just scummy Hollywood streets. I know throughout film history trilogies are a tough execution, and the third one typically falls short. I realize this is technically a sequel, but it does have ties to Pearl. I left the theatre disappointed, but still enjoyed the film and the movie going experience. The strengths of X, were missing in MaXXine. The cast was weak at best. Mia was great per usual, and this really amplified the subpar acting from the supporting cast. The casting of the detectives and other main roles (to coin the group Disturbed) stupifies me! The music was all right, but did not capture the essence of the 1980s with the exception of Ratt's "I'm Insane" which was played very early in the feature. The close-up coverage of Hollywood and the grime and decay were never contrasted with the cooler and brighter side of Hollywood. This is a weird sidenote but I felt like the showing of vehicles from that time period was forced and simply too much. Lastly, the stories running together and the way the film ended left me hollow and wanting far more of what we experienced in X, than what we were served in MaXXine. The title for the film should have been Ma_ _ ine!

Music

Highly Suspect drops their new single - check it out on Spotify: Four Tracks - 20 minutes

The 8th of October (To August 17th)

Grouped with The Blue-Eyed Devil - Summertime Voodoo & Summertime Voodoo - Edit

Score - 9

Mr. Z (Mykal) was the one who turned me onto Highly Suspect. They were not in my wheelhouse and I'm so glad he did share their great sound and lyrics! I totally dig the group's vibe, their lyrics and their rock sound. They appear to be old souls and it shows itself in their musical chops and unique and haunting sound.

The track The 8th of October is a hard listen for me. This is not due to it being a bad song, as it is truly a great song! It's a challenge for me because the lyrics and the music are so full of sorrow and cut to the quick for me. I strongly suggest any fans of Highly Suspect give this new single and the four-track grouping on Spotify a listen! For those of you who have not listened to Highly Suspect in a while or ever, get off your ass! I find myself being highly suspect of anyone who does not dig their sound!

Ratt dropped their second studio album Invasion of Your Privacy in 1985

10 tracks - 36 minutes

Score – 9

Ratt is the quintessential 80s rock band. The term metal band may not fit them. They called themselves fashion rock. Their music is hard charging, lyrics are pure 80s with some depth. The musicianship is top notch with two lead guitarists. The group was always second tier behind Motley Crue, and in some circles behind Poison. I challenge anyone that digs 1980s rock to check out Ratt, they really Roll! They are in my top five rock bands of all time, and that is saying something!

Alice in Chains fourth full length studio album released in 1985!

12 tracks - 64 minutes

Score – 8

Alice in Chains or AIC were the epitome of 1990s grunge. The lead singer had a magical tone (Staley) and they had another set of pipes that could take the lead on any song (Cantrell). Their musicianship was outstanding and their lyrics were deep, inspiring and dark. I can remember listening to their album Dirt for two months straight, almost every day. They can set a mood and their versatility simply rocked! They are in my top 15 rock bands of all time!

Foo Fighters punched their way onto the music scene with their debut album in 1985!

12 tracks - 44 minutes

Score - 9

Foo Fighters, or the fighters of foo. It’s hard for me to fathom the amazing music and success this incredible band led by Dave Grohl has had. Dave was one of three in the ground breaking group Nirvana. He played drums and kept the music tight in Nirvana, and with the enormous success they had how could he do more? Lead singer and head of Nirvana Curt Cobain died in the Spring of1994, and a year later Dave Grohl had assembled an amazing group and their first album has become iconic. The energy, lyrics and musicianship displayed by this group is second to none in the rock arena. Dave played all the instruments on his first album and more for the Foo Fighters, he is sickly talented. If you have not found this hard charging rock group yet, please fucking do! They are in my top 20 rock groups of all time!

Wellness

We want to remind all of our psychos to take care of themselves!

Here are some tips to promote your wellness:

Eating well on a budget:

Eating well doesn’t have to break the bank. Check out these tips for eating well while sticking to a budget. Meal plan: o Plan your meals before you shop based on what is on sale/in season, meals you actually enjoy cooking and eating, and ingredients that can be used in more than one meal. Grocery Shopping: o Make a list and stick to it. o Shop at home first. Use ingredients you already have in your pantry instead of buying new. o Shop in season. Buy bulk when appropriate. Skip eating out. Preparing your meals at home can cut food costs dramatically.

Reduce your sugar intake:

Did you know the average American consumes a total of 350 calories a day from added sugars? In one year, most Americans will consume anywhere between 80-150 pounds of sugar! Consuming this much sugar can put us at higher risk for developing things like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other health problems. Try out these tips for reducing your added sugar intake: Choose plain water or carbonated water with lemon instead of a soda or juice. ∙ Buy plain varieties of products like yogurt or cereal and add fruit as a sweetener. Avoid making treats an everyday food and reward yourself with non-food rewards. Enjoy desserts occasionally, a smaller portion will help keep calories down while still satisfying your sweet tooth.

Mindful eating:

Mindful eating can help you enjoy your food more and reach your health goals. Try: Taking note of the color, texture, and smell of your food before taking a bite. What do you notice that you haven't noticed before?  Chewing each bite entirely before having another bite. Notice how the food's taste and texture change with each chew. Enjoy an entire meal free of distractions. Just you, your thoughts, and your food.

Basic mindfulness:

Practicing mindfulness can help us to decrease stress and anxiety and put everything into perspective. In mindfulness practice, we connect with our innate awareness, giving ourselves the space to respond rather than react to daily stimulus. Mindfulness practices don’t need to be complicated or take up a lot of your time. Try out one of the practices below daily to see what impact it has on your life.

Encourage and grow your gratitude:

Feeling like you’re in a slump? Research has shown that expressing gratitude on a daily basis can improve your energy levels and mood as well as help you get more sleep, boost your immune system, and lower your risk of disease. Try this “Three Good Things” practice to help cultivate gratitude in your own life. 3 Good Things Practice: Take out a piece of paper.  Write down 3 good things that you are grateful for today. Keep up the practice for at least 2 weeks before reflecting on your experience

Breathing affects your feelings:

When we are feeling anxious or scared, we tend to breathe quicker, shallow breaths. This leads to a lower concentration of carbon dioxide in our blood causing us to feel lightheaded, clammy, sweaty, and have tingly fingers or toes. Learning how to control our breathing can help us better manage the emotions we are feeling. Next time you are feeling anxious, scared, or upset try this:  Sit comfortably. Close your eyes if you want to.  Breathe slowly and steadily in through your nose for a count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 2.  Breathe out slowly and steadily for a count of 4.  Repeat for a few minutes – do this consistently at least five days per week.

Stress Management:

Positive thinking can help manage your stress and improve your overall health. Try to approach problems with a positive outlook, looking for the bright side and making the most out of a potentially bad situation. Try to find the best in others and yourself. To cultivate positive thinking, try writing three good things that happen each day, embracing humor, or starting each day with your favorite song!

Self-Appreciation:

Self-appreciation is a reflection of our inner sense of well-being. Having low self-appreciation can have many negative impacts on our overall health and wellbeing. Low self-appreciation can negatively impact our relationships with others and ourselves, our ability to do our jobs, and both our mental and physical health. While developing a greater self-appreciation can be difficult, there are some simple things you can do each day to help. Challenge negative thinking. Identify situations or conditions that tend to deflate you.  Take a step back. Observe your thoughts, actions, and situation from an outsider’s point of view. Practice self-care; whatever that may mean to you.

Self-Care:

Self-care is an essential part of our health and wellness. Unfortunately, it is one of the first things to fall by the wayside in times of stress or uncertainty. Ignoring selfcare can lead to chronic stress, burnout, and depression. Simple things, done each day can help improve our self-care habits and improve our health and wellness. Look at the ideas below for ways you can practice self-care each day. Go for a walk.  Journal. Meditate. Go out in nature. Listen to your favorite music.  Do something creative. Reach out to friends and family.

Wellness, and mental health awareness have improved and increased immeasurably over the last five years or so. It’s unfortunate this awareness and understanding of its importance took so long to come to the forefront. We move forward, and more and more we understand how vital taking care of our mental well-being is critical to living a positive life. Mr. Z (Mykal) and I struggle just like many of our psychos do. This is a work in progress. It is ongoing. This isn’t something we just do once and check that box and move on. This is a daily and weekly focus. I pledge to be more consistent with my breathing technique. This takes so little time and is such a positive. I will be more consistent with my 4x weekly walk and run. I will do better with my daily focus on the moment. Living in the now, and not being so goddamn hard on myself. I challenge all of you to do the same! We want everyone to be healthy and happy!

Some Sports

Green Bay Packers

In Packers news:

  • Training camp started 7.22, Packers one of the few NFL teams that hold their training camp in their home city

  • Jordan Love decided to hold in, and is not fully practicing until he has inked his new contract

  • The Packers change in defensive scheme and coach are showing early positive signs

  • Packers extended stud defensive lineman Kenny Clark, who is one of the oldest players on the roster at 29!

  • Head coach Matt LaFleur is confident that his roster is very talented top to bottom, this is a championship season!

  • Packers Family Night is 8.3 which is an evening practice that fans are invited to at Lambeau Field. They typically have 50K plus fans attend!

My way too early prediction for the Packer’s upcoming season is 12-5 and win their division! Carry the G!

***Update – Jordan Love signs his new contract on 7.26 around 6p Mountain Time!

Milwaukee Bucks

In Bucks news:

  • Bucks training camp starts the first few days in October

  • NBA regular season tips off on October 22nd, their 79th season

  • The Bucks did not make any big moves to speak of, with limited cap space and lacking draft picks the Bucks are all in with their current roster

  • Doc Rivers will stay at the head coaching position, for now

  • Darvin Ham returned after his stint with coaching the Lakers, it seems like this highly regarded Bucks assistant is waiting in the wings to take over for Rivers

  • Giannis is playing for the Greek Olympic team, with many Bucks fans holding their breath over his health

  • If Middleton, Giannis and Lillard are healthy and they can get one more amazing season out of Brook Lopez, they can very well be championship bound!

Milwaukee Brewers

In Brewers news:

  • This was going to be a longer piece, but I’m not a baseball fan and word has it that the over performing Brewers have lost Christian Yelich (stud all-around player) for the remainder of the season

  • Brewers have been playing well above expectations after the departure of traitor Counsel and replacing that manager with Pat Murphy

  • Brewers are 60-43 as of 7.26 and in first place in the National League Central six games ahead of the Cardinals

  • With 59 games to go in the regular season, can the Brew Crew overcome the loss of their best all-around player?

  • Cheers to the rest of the season!

Olympics are underway in Paris. Blah Blah Blah. Don’t drink or swim in the water!

Random Headlines

There is a lot of interesting headlines the past month. Let’s take a look!

  • In Breaking Bad news, a multimillion-dollar crystal meth lab found hidden in a remote South Africa Farm was found by authorities. No blue meth on site! Chemicals and product valued at over $100 million dollars confiscated

  • Penis news? The size of a man’s penis has been in the headlines over the last four weeks. A female doctor confirms that average penile length is 5.2 inches. There are so many jokes, but I will refrain. As Mr. Z (Mykal) would tell me, don’t be a dick!

  • Ever want to have those McDonald’s nugget sauces at home? There are plenty of copycat recipes for most of their different flavors. My favorite is hot mustard, and by Googling McDonald’s nugget sauces you have your pick of many different recipes. These sauces are great on many things including sandwiches, chicken and yes, the frozen chicken nuggets you find in your grocer’s freezer

  • Huffpost recently shared seven things you should always do after sex. Here is an edited rundown: Hit the bathroom. Choose breathable underwear. Cuddle up. Hydrate. Grab a healthy snack. Compliment your partner. Laugh and enjoy the moment.

  • Here are nine bottom shelf bourbons that are plenty good and budget friendly: Wild Turkey 101. Four Roses. Bulleit Bourbon. Evan Williams Black Label. Buffalo Trace. Jim Beam Single Barrel. Elijah Craig. Old Grand-Dad. Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond. We give a shout out to Four Roses and Elijah Craig as two of our favorites! Good bourbon doesn’t have to cost too much!

  • Oregon forced to recriminalize drugs after disastrous decimalization experiment. It’s unfortunate, and poor management can be looked at first and foremost. I will refrain from any more commenting as it gets into politics

  • The 2024 Summer Olympics are underway from Paris France. Stay out of the water!

(An Olympic swimsuit costs $550, once example of the crazy dollars it costs to hold the Olympics!)

  • Two high ranking leaders of a powerful Mexican drug cartel arrested in Texas, the one informant is a son of El Chapo and wanted to turn himself in.

  • I always see these odd stories, two bears, a momma bear and her cub became trapped in an automobile in Connecticut and they trashed the car. I mean, WTF?

  • More Olympic news, Snoop Dogg carries the torch for the opening ceremonies. What a world we live in! Yikes!

  • Southwest Airlines is starting to assign seats for its passengers ending a 50-year tradition

  • Eminem brings an end to Taylor Swift’s reign at number one on the charts!

  • Summertime swimming, do you really have to wait 30-minutes after eating before heading back into the water? Most doctors say no, this is a myth in most cases. We are not promoting it one way or the other. (I know I always had to wait growing up and wanting to head back into the pool. My parents were high! Or something!)

  • Wildfires are spreading in many states including those in the Southwest as well and California and the Pacific Northwest. Be safe out there!

  • Video game performers are going on strike due to concerns over artificial intelligence

  • Canada’s national soccer team is in hot water. They just dismissed the women’s soccer team coach over verified use of drones to spy on their competitors during practice. I mean, WTF?

  • In you can’t make this shit up: Oscar Meyer Wienermobile flips on its side after crash on suburban Chicago highway. The rumor that the crash was caused by spilled ketchup has not been confirmed. We relish the speedy return of the wiener vehicle! This story is not related to penis length story!

  • And lastly, chicken wings advertised as boneless can have bones in them! This just in from the Ohio Supreme Court. I mean, WTF?

  • And one more lastly; We celebrate that there are 30 days remaining in the hot part of summer in Phoenix! The Farmer’s Almanac is showing lower hot temps for August!

Commentary

I sit here in amazement as I scroll through the news headlines. I take a deep breath and am thankful summer is closer to ending than beginning in the desert that is Phoenix. We have always advocated leaving politics at the door, and will continue to be consistent with that. Regardless, so much of the news cycle is consumed by politics, among other divisive topics and all the bad taking place in our country and around the world. Mr. Z (Mykal) and I stopped watching the news years ago and it was a game changer. We still keep our eyeballs on the major headlines but we refrain from scrolling through news and news headlines because the content is so negative and gut wrenching. The commentary section has been an off shoot of our wellness area for several chapters. It makes sense for all of us to take care of ourselves. Everything starts with us and taking care of ourselves. I openly admit I’m not consistent enough or focused enough on this element. I have vowed that August is the time for change. I go in and out of breathing techniques, practicing gratitude, staying positive and being present in the moment. I challenge all of our psychos as well as myself with making a commitment to being good to ourselves. Those of you who have this mastered, a shout out to you indeed!

The future is always tenable, in these widely wild and crazy times the future seems less tethered than usual. I appreciate those in my life, and I’m grateful to have such an amazing son! I know by focusing on the now, the moment and being present I will enjoy my best life. I know practicing different elements of wellness consistently will contribute to my mental health as well as physical health.

Mr. Z (Mykal) and I continue to move forward. We have accomplished a lot in the last year or so and beyond. We move into our next chapter as we move forward. We are revamping and rebranding our Psycho Studios Podcast with a video cast on YouTube starting in September. Mr. Z (Mykal) has been rocking it with new designs both visually and intellectually. We are embarking on the pitch, and the first week of August finds us reaching out to studios and streaming services and the like to share our intellectual property. We have many irons in the fire and I know we are going to be successful! We recently had six more film treatments approved by the Library of Congress for copyright! I know for me it is an anxious time. The imposter syndrome creeps in along with Mr. Doubt. I say fuck that!  I know our writings are unique and interesting. I know our path is unique, it is also our hidden strength. I’m beyond fortunate that my son is such a creative, smart, good looking and old soul young man! We got this!

And you got this! Take care of yourself. Be cool to others. Show gratitude. Help others when you can. The rest of this year is going to be amazing!

Roosevelt’s famous line still holds much weight today: The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!

Interesting Individual of the Month (IIM)

George Washington is our interesting individual this month!

George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was an American political leader, general, statesman, and Founding Father who also served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. He led Patriot forces to victory in the nation’s War of Independence with England.  Washington presided at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 which established the new federal government. George is known as the Father of His Country where his strong and progressive leadership was displayed in the formative days of the new nation.

Born in 1732, George was the first of six children. His father was a justice of the peace. George did not have a formal education but he did attend a so-called Church School. As an adult he was a very talented mapmaker. He had exemplary penmanship and practiced often as a teenager and young adult. He became a surveyor without the formal training in a small county in Virginia. In 1752 he was appointed a major and a commander in the military. 1753 found Washington being sent on a mission to speak with the French in British occupied territory, the French would not honor the request to vacate the territory. He showed gumption and tact with this meeting regardless of outcome. He moved up the ranks in the military with smarts, new ideas and the way he treated his men. He ultimately became a general and led a professional group of soldiers and his results were typically positive and entrenched in efficiency and intelligence. He was eventually elected commander in chief – which at the time was not being president. This took place in 1775 until 1783. He became the first president of the United States. He was instrumental in defeating England in the fight for the state’s freedom and recognition as the 13 colonies. There is much to be discerned by the history of Washington and founding of what we know today as the United States. We refrain from getting into politics, and Washington’s history was laced with elements that today are taboo, wrong or worse. Regardless, given the accomplishments that founded a great nation, he is nonetheless VERY interesting!

I felt compelled to add one more interesting individual of the month.

Bela Lugosi

Born in 1882 in Hungary. Died in 1956 in sunny California

I will keep this short. Mr Z. (Mykal) and I often share tidbits and images from the classic Universal Monsters. They have a soft spot in our hearts as they contrast mightily from the horror of today. Bela started it all for Universal with Dracula in 1931. When one reviews Bela’s life and journey from the time he came to Hollywood it is filled with darkness and hard times. We like to focus on the good times which started with his iconic and never captured again portrayal of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He was perfect in so many ways for that role. He had the size and build for the classic blood sucker coming in at six feet one inch tall with a slight frame and dark hair and fair complexion. His natural accent was perfect for someone that was making their way through the Borgo Pass. Mismanagement of the Universal franchise along with Bela’s lack of understanding of so-called show business hurt what would have been an amazing rise in Tinseltown. Bela appeared in numerous  films, all with a horror base. The magic that was found in 1931 never returned. Mr. Lugosi struggled as we moved out of the late 1940s and into the 1950s. He had one son, who has carried his father’s torch with positive memories and thoughts of what might have been. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp bring us a unique take on Bela’s life indirectly in the black and white classic Ed Wood. It’s a hard watch for those of us that are Lugosi fans, but worth the time regardless.

Bela was known by many of his acting counterparts as a man who strived for greatness within his craft. He was known to be warm and generous in the early days of his stardom.

Mr. Z (Mykal) and I will always remember him as Dracula. The one who started it all for an incredible franchise of horror within simpler times. His expressive face, his dialect and the use of the English language along with his contemptuous glare haunt us in the most positive way imaginable.

RIP Bela!
