Film
We did a deep dive on our June one podcast with 1994’s Wes Craven’s New Nightmare along
with an exploration of NIN’s 1994 album Downward Spiral.
Speaking of Wes Craven here is a list of our favorite films by the master:
These are a must watch for horror fans and a great rewatch for those that love the genre and
experienced them previously!
Last House on the Left 1972
The Hills Have Eyes 1977
Deadly Blessing 1981
Swamp Thing 1982
The Hills Have Eyes II 1984
A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984
A Nightmare on Elm Street Dream Warriors 1987
The Serpent and the Rainbow 1988
Shocker 1989
Wes Craven’s New Nightmare 1994
Scream 1996 [Along with Scream 2-4]
It’s interesting to track the evolution of Wes Craven. Last House on the Left is a beast of a film. A
very hard watch. Grotesque violence, over the top savagery. We look at the Scream franchise and
how those are bloody and gory and violent but almost cookie cutter compared to Wes’s early
stuff. RIP Wes.
Film Reviews:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
I recently watched Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and I would give it a solid 7 out of 10.
The movie stands out primarily for its incredible CGI, which alone makes it worth watching. The
visual effects bring the ape characters to life with remarkable realism, showcasing the
advancements in motion capture technology.
The story is engaging and successfully distinguishes itself from previous entries in the franchise.
Set generations after the reign of Caesar, it introduces new characters and a fresh narrative. This
installment explores a post-apocalyptic world with detailed set pieces and immersive world-
building, adding depth to the ape society and their struggles
However, the film also follows some familiar tropes from older movies. While this provides a sense
of continuity, it also makes parts of the plot feel predictable. The human storyline, in particular,
lacks depth and development, which could have enriched the overall experience if given more
focus.
The pacing is another issue; the initial setup is somewhat slow, but the action sequences,
especially the final one, are masterfully crafted and highly engaging. The villain, Proximus
Caesar, is a compelling character, but his arc feels underdeveloped due to limited screen time.
Overall, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a visually stunning movie with a good story that
continues the franchise in a meaningful way. It sets the stage for future installments, and I hope
the next movie in the series takes more risks with its formula to deliver an even more compelling
narrative.

Bloodline Killer (Skulleton) - 2024 Rated R 90 minutes
This was a film that I stumbled upon one late night in the month of May. It has an interesting
cast to include Tyrese Gibson, Bruce Dern and Shawnee Smith. Interestingly, Shawnee produced
this movie as well. I give this film a 2, as it is a mess from start to finish. It was awkward to watch,
and the story moves all over the place. The movie was finished shooting at the end of 2022.
Released in April 2024. I understand the premise and what they appeared to be going for with
this film but it does not translate to the screen. I will leave this right here, as things will only go
sideways if I dive deeper. Shawnee Smith was great in the remake of The Blob and in her
reoccurring role in the Saw Franchise. In this film, Shawnee shows glimpses of those roles.
Abagail - 2023 Rated R 109 minutes
Let’s start off by saying this movie had a reported budget of $28 million and a box office of almost
$40 million. We would take that kind of gross profit any day! I recall watching the trailer and
knowing [90% sure] that it was not for me. Melissa Barrera, from the most recent iteration of the
Scream franchise is very good in the movie. I think she is better in this film than in the Scream
flicks. The issue is that the story, and the unraveling of the last third of the movie do not add up.
There are interesting special effects, forced who done it and the vampire lore mixed together. I
could break down the entire film, to no avail. The bottom line; the movie is a three to me. It
wasn’t my cup of tea. I like solid story, great dialogue and for the film to make sense. The morale
of this story to me is not the morale they attempt to share in the film. The morale of the story to
me is that America is starved for horror films. This is a very promising message!
Intruder – 1989 Rated R 83 minutes
Mr. Z and I watched this flick on a random weekday afternoon. Sometimes that can be the
coolest time to watch a movie to me. This off the beaten path horror film stars Sam Raimi and
Bruce Campbell. [Alright, they don’t star in it?!]
This movie is a blast from the past. Mr. Z and I watched this based on the fact Sam and Ted
Raimi are acting in it and Bruce Campbell shows up in the flick as well. It’s a cool setting for the
so-called slasher film as it is set in a grocery store! Interesting to us is that Evil Dead 1 and 2 were
released prior to this film. Mr. Z and I give this film a 3 from a film standpoint. For nostalgia’s
sake it was a 9! We enjoyed watching this hidden gem, and to see Sam Raimi and his brother
acting in the movie was a real treat! The overall acting and dialogue left a lot to be desired. The
story is paper thin as well. The practical effects and kills are interesting and we find Greg
Nicotero supplying the great spatter and kill effects. Greg went onto fame in The Walking Dead
franchise. For true horror fans this is a must see, grab a cold beverage and some popcorn and
settle in for an hour and 23 minutes of campiness!

Highly Suspect new song review
Highly Suspect new song Summertime Voodoo resonates deeply with me. It feels like a
soundtrack to my life right now, as I on the verge of a new adventure. The song explores the
journey along an unknown path, symbolizing the thrill and uncertainty of life. This theme
mirrors my own experience of recently getting my motorcycle learner&permit and preparing to
hit the road for the first time.
Summertime Voodoo has a funky summertime blues vibe with hard rock roots, creating a
sound that feels both fresh and nostalgic. It about venturing into the unknown and sometimes
finding that the destination isn’t what you expected. The song & narrative of crashing a motorcycle
ties in eerily well with my current situation, symbolizing the risks and unexpected turns on the
journey.
The track timing couldn’t be more fitting. As I prepare for my own rides, this song serves as both
a cautionary tale and an anthem of excitement. The mix of gritty guitars and haunting melodies
encapsulates the dual feelings of thrill and trepidation I feel about my new endeavor. Listening to
Summertime Voodoo makes me feel understood and accompanies me perfectly as I embark on
this new chapter in my life.
Mr W
Mr. Z turned me onto Highly Suspect many years ago. There newest single drove me to build a
Highly Suspect Spotify playlist. Summertime Voodoo is the perfect title for their hot off the
presses single! If you dig rock, give this a listen!
Highly Suspect Playlist
Mr. Z and I did a deep dive as previously mentioned on NIN’s Downward Spiral. This prompted
a Spotify playlist build. This is a great summertime grouping of a baker’s dozen songs by Trent

Wellness
Incorporate Micro-Meditations
Micro-meditations are short, mindful moments throughout your day that can help reduce
stress and increase focus without requiring a significant time commitment. These can
be as brief as 1-3 minutes. For example, you can:
Morning Routine: Before getting out of bed, take a few deep breaths and set an intention
for your day.
Work Breaks: Close your eyes, take five deep breaths, and focus solely on your breathing. This
can be done at your desk or during a break.
Evening Wind-Down: Spend a couple of minutes focusing on the sensations of your body
as you wind down for bed. Incorporating these short sessions can help you stay
centered and calm throughout your day.
Practice Gratitude Journaling
Gratitude journaling involves writing down things you’re thankful for each day. This practice can
improve your mood and overall outlook on life. Here’s how you can get started:
Daily Entry: Every evening, write down three things you are grateful for. They can be as
simple as a nice meal, a good conversation, or a moment of laughter.
Reflective Prompts: Use prompts like What made me smile today?or What is something I
appreciate about myself? to guide your entries.
Consistency: Try to make this a daily habit. Over time, you’ll start to notice a shift in your
mindset towards more positivity and appreciation.
Gratitude journaling can be done in a physical journal, a digital app, or even just a notes app on
your phone.
Meditation is one of those words that many shy away from or poo poo. I was once told by
someone in the healing industry that meditation can be so many things. It’s ultimately what
enables one to become calm. To relax. To gain focus. To release stress and negative energy.
Closing your eyes in the evening and listening to ocean waves, sounds of a rain forest, or other
calming sounds; this is meditation. It’s about being consistent, and finding what works for you.
In season two of Mad Men Don Draper is shown reading a short book he came across when he
was at a bar having lunch: “Meditations in an Emergency”.
More Wellness
Here are 10 wellness tips from Upstate Medical University (New. York) [With some add-ons from
myself]:
1) Eat breakfast every day. Skipping breakfast promotes weight gain. An early start on eating also
keeps your metabolism more active throughout the day. [Keep it healthy and fresh, protein shakes
made from scratch are excellent!]
2) Starting your day with a meal that includes quality protein like eggs can help reduce hunger
and the number of calories you eat by 18 percent, according to a study in Nutrition Research.
[Boiled eggs in bulk at the beginning of the week can be a quick substitute]
3) Researchers at the University of Vermont found that when study participants cut their TV
time in half, they burned an extra 120 calories per day, which is equal to about one pound of
weight loss every month. [Cut the social media scrolling by that much too!]
4) Research shows that dieters who ate the most dietary fiber had the greatest amount of weight
loss and is inversely related to obesity, meaning lots of fiber equals lots less weight and body fat.
[Fiber up!]
5) A recent study found that logging what you eat doubles the number of pounds lost. Jot down
what time you eat, what and how much you eat, and how you were feeling when you ate. [Notes,
to do lists are essential for staying organized and healthy]
6) The goal for most of us is not to first and foremost lose weight, but to make changes to our
lifestyles that improve our overall health. [This is key, focus on the eating heathier, eating out less
and consistent exercise will bring positive results]
7) Switching from a typical American diet higher in disease-causing saturated and trans fats,
processed carbs and packaged foods, to more lean proteins (such as fish and beans), whole grains,
fruits and vegetables can change your body composition, if not your weight. [Learn to adjust your
tastes, these changes take patience but the rewards are great]
8) Stretching exercises done twice a week helps keep flexibility. Consider 10 minutes of stretching
twice a week to improve your flexibility.
9) As you age, practice balance exercises to help prevent falls and injuries such as walking heal-to-
toe, standing on one foot, or standing up and sitting down without using your hands. [Stay active,
walking 3-5 times per week has amazing benefits]
10) It is suggested that adults complete at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity
at least five days a week plus strength building exercise on 2 or more days a week that work all
major muscle groups. [Walking is a great simple exercise when done consistently]
Practical Life Skills
Batch Cooking and Freezing Meals
Batch cooking is an efficient way to prepare meals in advance, save time, and reduce daily
cooking stress. Here’s how to get started:
Plan Your Meals: Choose a few recipes that freeze well, such as soups, stews, casseroles, or
pasta dishes. Make a shopping list of all the ingredients you’ll need.
Cook in Large Quantities: Dedicate a few hours on the weekend or a free day to cook
large batches of your chosen recipes. This can be done in stages if necessary.
Portion and Freeze: Divide the cooked meals into single or family-sized portions and store
them in airtight containers or freezer bags. Label each container with the name of the
dish and the date it was made.
Reheat and Enjoy: On busy days, simply reheat a pre-cooked meal in the microwave or
oven. This not only saves time but also ensures you have a home-cooked meal ready to
go.
Batch cooking helps reduce food waste, saves money, and ensures you always have a healthy meal
option available, even on your busiest days.
Shopping: Create and Stick to a Meal Plan
Creating a meal plan not only helps you stay organized but also ensures you buy only
what you need, reducing waste and saving money. Here’s how to effectively create and
stick to a meal plan:
Weekly Planning: Set aside time each week to plan your meals. Consider your schedule,
dietary needs, and preferences.
Grocery List: Based on your meal plan, create a detailed grocery list. Categorize items by
sections of the store to make shopping more efficient.
Stick to the List: When shopping, stick strictly to your list to avoid impulse purchases. This
helps in staying within budget and reduces food waste.
Flexible Planning: Allow for flexibility in your meal plan to accommodate unexpected changes,
like dining out or using leftovers.
Finding Practical things that can benefit budget, time management and relationship strengths are
important to many of us.
More Life Skill Notes
Here are seven tips to help with practical life skills:
Critical thinking – This one can sound so daunting. Take time to review and think things out as
opposed to being impulsive can go a long way in this category. Tons of books on how to sharpen
this skill are available.
Basic technology skills – Understanding the positive uses for your smartphone and other devices
can really assist with time management and getting shit done. Technology for Dummies is a good
start from a book standpoint.
Ability to show empathy – sincere empathy is a skill that benefits your relationships as well as
your personal well-being. There are a ton of books related to counseling that can help in this
area, and remember to practice what you read.
Confidence in your day to day – Confidence is a huge one for most everything we do. Practice
makes perfect is golden here. Work with your family and friends and determine your strengths
and weaknesses and work on them
Communication skills in varying environments – This one should be at the top as everything else
rolls down from it. There are many books, courses and the like regarding ways to improve your
communication. Journaling. Note taking. To do lists and the like can assist with the writing side.
Speaking in public is a critical area that enhances and improves verbal communication. Imagine
your audience naked, or maybe not!
Creativity in simple tasks to full blown life changes – We often hear the word creative and think
I’m not creative. What the Hell does creative mean? It means doing things from your mind, your
heart. It’s the little things to career changing. There are a million books and courses related to
creativity. Pick something and go for it! Write a novel!
Adaptability within the chaos that can be life – This one could fill 100s of pages alone. The
country, the world is a mess. Adapting to the changes is key to our wellness. Showing gratitude,
being grateful for who and what we are and have as opposed to the fear of missing out are a great
start to adapting to how fucked up things are. Make meals at home. Maintain your homes and
autos. Spend time with family and friends. Take a deep breath and set your living space up for
the calm. Move forward, be kind to yourself and others.

The 17-game schedule is about as favorable as an NFL schedule can be sans the out of this
country game!
Our way too early predictions for the Green Bay Packers season - Mr. Z 12-5 and myself 11-6.
There are a total of 272 NFL games and we can’t wait for the season to start!
We do our best to not get caught up in the off-season story lines as they are typically just fodder
to drive the machine that is the NFL. We know NFL players and coaches all get paid way too
much. We enjoy the NFL by not thinking about the pay, the pre-game – post game and all that is
between and simply focus on the games themselves. The Packers WILL sign J Love to a big juicy
contract. We are going to see those second and third season players blossom and if the Packers
can figure out the soft tissue issues the sky is the limit! Carry the G!
NBA / Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks are licking their wounds after a really tough regular season as well as a flame out post
season. The Dame trade did not bear the fruit the Bucks nation was hoping for. Giannis’s health
is key and an off season with the Doc will hopefully propel this team to great heights.
The Celtics and the Mavericks are poised to do battle after sweeping their lackluster opponents.
Psycho Studios predicts a Mavericks championship in six games!
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers have started the very long season strong. They are currently 31 – 22 as of this
reporting. This gives them first place in the National League Central. Get this, there is only 109
games to go in the regular season! I mean, what the fuck!?
Random Headlines:
- McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee, in 1962. This mascot was short lived as
research showed that customers did not identify with Speedee. The Golden Arches
took over as the iconic symbol for Mickey D’s!
- There was also Ronald McDonald, the so-called loveable clown and someone who
represented McDonald’s for years. Back in 2016 there was a social media trend
where people were advised to dress as clowns and commit violence. This took
place in the U.S., the U.K. as well as Australia. Ronald’s appearances and
presence was all but removed and at minimum diminished.
- This is about event tickets and not politics. The United States is suing
Ticketmaster and Live Nation for being monopolies. The legal demand is due to
how harmful the two companies’ business practices impacts concerts and other
events. Cheers to this! A long time coming!
- Summertime blues in New York? Here are things that can get you fined or worse
at the public beaches in the Big Apple:
Littering – Smoking – Dogs – Consuming Alcohol – Jet Skis – Bicycle riding /
Skateboarding. That is quite the list! NFP – no fun police!
- Marijuana may soon be a Schedule III drug! This is significant on many levels!
This will help medical research, and make it easier in that arena. It will also help
the numerous dispensaries in this country and affording them to bank in a normal
business fashion. Lastly, it will also aid those who are incarcerated for the Mother
Nature herb
- Swedish Fish – What flavor are they? One might assume due to their bright red
color they are cherry, strawberry or even fruit punch. Nope! The flavor is
lingonberry! The candy from across the pond are referred to as starch jellies.
- A skeleton found in a chimney in Madison Wisconsin [Mr. W’s born and bred
state] is identified after 34 years! The music store, Good n Loud found the
skeleton in 1989. DNA comes through again, and Madison Police determined the
bones were from Ronnie Joe Kirk of Oklahoma. To do this day no one knows why
Ronnie was in that damn chimney! Them bones!
- Mother’s Day has come and gone once again this May! Anna Jarvis has long been
considered the inventor of the special maternal holiday. Oddly enough, after
promoting the holiday and getting it passed in 1914 by congress, Ann spent the
majority of her remaining years trying to abolish the holiday. She hated the
commercialization!
- Mr. Z often chastises me for writing old school with pencil and paper and
sometimes even pen and notepad! According to research handwriting is probably
one of the most complex motor skills that the brain is capable. The study goes
deeper than that with results confirming that writing by hand increases creative
thinking and creative learning! Put that in your pen and smoke it!
- Scientists are hopeful the Colorado River will be fuller and the future may be
wetter! A new study is delivering a dose of hope that the next 25 years are forecast
to be wetter than the last! Conservation efforts regarding water usage are still key!

- Lastly, check out the article from April 28 of this year in the Daily Meal by Jacob
Smith. Titled, What it was like to Eat at the first Steakhouse. It’s an interesting
read about eating in a fine establishment in the U. S. Also, Google Delmonico’s
Steakhouse. The steakhouse owned and run by the two Delmonico brothers
opened in 1837 in New York. The steakhouse is still open and contributing to a
national industry that is set to reach $1 trillion in sales in 2024!
Commentary
I sit here reflecting on the documentary I just watched. This isn’t a review per se. The Beach
Boys documentary (2024) was very well done. I would give it a 7 (out of 10). It wasn’t over the
top, nor was it TMZ’d. If you are a fan of the group and or that era it is a very good watch. In
watching the pictures, videos and stories unfold it hit me like a ton of bricks – the loss of
innocence. This isn’t profound as that phrase has been used for decades. In viewing the early days
of the Beach Boys (early 1960s) it transported me back to simpler times. There was a light and
airiness to the time period. As the group experienced much success moving through the decade,
the country was experiencing unprecedented change. The country had experienced the
assassination of John F. Kennedy. It appeared the country had moved out of the mourning period
and was healing. The end of the decade saw all that change abruptly. Bobby Kennedy, Martin
Luther King Jr were assassinated. The Civil Rights movement was turning violent. Protests
against the Vietnam War were moving from peaceful to hateful. The country was a caldron filled
with change (rightfully so) and upheaval. The Beach Boys were singing “Wouldn’t it be nice” and
The Beatles were sharing Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever! The last year of the 60s is
marked as the end of the innocence. We can thank Manson’s family of deranged killers and
psychotics. As the unrest moved across the United States, two nights of senseless and extreme
violence changed everything for good, er bad. The Tate and LaBianca murders took place in the
summer of 1969. The murders were violent and committed to add fuel to the uneasiness and
protests already happening. I take a deep breath and wonder what the country could have been
like without those terribly senseless acts of violence. Not to mention how incredibly different
things would have been if the Kennedy Brothers and Martin Luther King Jr had not been
gunned down in their primes. Life is bittersweet, and we all want more sweet than bitter. The
innocence was snuffed out. We fast forward to current times and things are more tumultuous
than ever. I plead with everyone to be cool to one another. Appreciate what we have and not long
for what we don’t have. Say hello to your neighbors. Help those that require a hand. Respect your
fellow citizens. Let’s afford calm to replace the frenetic worrying so many live in. I’m not here to
preach, but I do implore my fellow citizens to navigate with common sense, care for one another
and sensibility. That certainly would be nice.
